Vacation Pictures #2 - The Zugspitze

This is the Sonn Alpin (Alpine Sun) restaurant, on the glacier at the mountain's eastern shoulder. It's at the 2600 meter level.

The view from the Sonn Alpin, looking generally south towards Switzerland.

That up there is the actual summit of the Zugspitze, along with the highest beer garden in Germany.

This chapel (about a hundred feet or so higher than the Sonn Alpin and maybe a couple hundred yards away) is dedicated to those who lost their lives climbing the mountains.

The view from the chapel, looking east toward Austria.

Another view towards the summit.

This is the view from the summit towards the Eissee (Ice Lake), an glacier-fed lake that also marks the terminal where the cog railway and the cable car meet.

Yours Truly at the closest point he wanted to get to the actual summit of the Zugspitze, which is seen over his shoulder. To reach it would require actually clambering over the rocks, trusting to cable railings.

The cross marks the actual summit, at 9,734 feet above sea level. You can see that at least one hardy soul's made the climb.

The view from the summit, looking east.

WOW, you were high man. Interesting that there wasn't snow on the mountains. Isn't there usually snow up there?

Yes, there is snow on the Zugspitze at that time of year. THe shoulder of the mountain (where the Sonn Alpin's located) is on the rim of the glacier. In some of the long-distance shots you can see ice and snow on the peaks.

Hi I came across of your blog and saw your experience in Garmischen- Partenkirchen. I was wondering if its worthy to go over there, i.e. will you recommend your best friend to go there?

You made a day trip there and I was wondering if I should do that or spend 2 nights over there? Would you have stay there? I was planning to go straight from Munich Airport to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and spend 2 nights there before going back Munich. Other than Zugspitze, I was wondering if there is anything there to see?

I look forward to your sharing :) as it seems that not many who has gone there has shared something on the web :)

Sincerely,
Siying,
